Stud Bolt Longevity: Avoiding Fatigue in Cyclic Systems

High-cycle systems—like reciprocating pumps or steam turbine headers—place extreme fatigue on flanges. In those situations, a stud bolt can fatigue and break long before its calculated life. To mitigate this, I specify high-tensile, fatigue-resistant stud bolts, often with rolled threads and heat-treated cores.

We also install vibration dampening gaskets and perform periodic tensile checks. In one refinery, fatigue failures dropped by 80% after updating all header stud bolts to B7 standards with accreditation. It proved that smart material selection, paired with proactive maintenance, keeps systems running longer with fewer surprises.
